Mumbai: The 64th National Film awards have been announced. Sonam Kapoor starrer ‘Neerja’ directed by Ram Madhvani has bagged the National award in the Best Hindi Film category besides being honoured with the Special Mention Award.
Based on the life of Neerja Bhanot, purser of Pan Am 73 in 1986, who lost her life while saving passengers on board the hijacked flight, the film starring Sonam in the lead role went on to win the hearts of moviegoers by narrating the bravery of the late plane attendant.
Akshay Kumar has bagged the honour in the Best Actor category for his film ‘Rustom’.Loosely based on the 1959 Nanavati case, 'Rustom', a film directed by Tinu Suresh Desai saw Akshay essaying the role of a patriotic naval officer, who ends up in jail after killing the lover of his wife.
Child-artist Zaira Wasim, who played young Geeta Phogat in 'Dangal' starring Aamir Khan has won the award in the Best Supporting Actress category.
Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu starrer 'Pink' has won the Best Film on Social Issue category.
