‘Life of Pi’, Ang Lee nominated for Golden Globe awards

Movies which have bagged a nomination in the best motion picture (Drama) are ‘Argo’, ‘Django Unchained’, ‘Life of Pi’, ‘Lincoln’ and ‘Zero Dark Thirty’.

Los Angeles: ‘Lincoln’, a Steven Spielberg film, is leading the nomination pack for the 70th edition of the prestigious annual Golden Globe awards with seven gongs, it was announced here Thursday morning. ‘Django Unchained’ and ‘Argo’ have five nominations each.
The movie, which highlights then US president Abraham Lincoln`s struggles during the Civil War, has been nominated in various categories like best motion picture (drama), best actor (Daniel Day-Lewis), best director (Steven Spielberg), supporting actor (Tommy Lee Jones), supporting actress (Sally Field), screenplay (Tony Kushner) and original score, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced here.
Nominations in key film categories are as follows’ Movies which have bagged a nomination in the best motion picture (Drama) are ‘Argo’, ‘Django Unchained’, ‘Life of Pi’, ‘Lincoln’ and ‘Zero Dark Thirty’. In the best motion picture (Musical or Comedy) category, ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’, ‘Les Miserables’, ‘Moonrise Kingdom’, ‘Salmon Fishing in the Yemen’ and ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ have been nominated. Those competing for the best actor (Drama) trophy are Daniel Day-Lewis (‘Lincoln’), Richard Gere (‘Arbitrage’), John Hawkes (‘The Sessions’), Joaquin Phoenix (‘The Master’) and Denzel Washington (‘Flight’). Among the nominations for the best actor (Musical or Comedy) are Jack Black (‘Bernie’), Bradley Cooper (‘Silver Linings Playbook’), Hugh Jackman (‘Les Miserables’), Ewan McGregor (‘Salmon Fishing in the Yemen’) and Bill Murray (‘Hyde Park on Hudson’). The ones vying for the best actress (Drama) trophy include Jessica Chastain (‘Zero Dark Thirty’), Naomi Watts (‘The Impossible’), Rachel Weisz (‘The Deep Blue Sea’), Helen Mirren (‘Hitchcock’) and Marion Cotillard (‘Rust and Bone’). Emily Blunt (‘Salmon Fishing in the Yemen’), Judi Dench (‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’), Jennifer Lawrence (‘Silver Linings Playbook’), Maggie Smith (‘Quartet’) and Meryl Streep (‘Hope Springs’) are in the waiting for the best actress (Musical or Comedy) award. Among the directors, anyone from Ben Affleck (‘Argo’), Kathryn Bigelow (‘Zero Dark Thirty’), Ang Lee (‘Life of Pi’), Steven Spielberg (‘Lincoln’) and Quentin Tarantino (‘Django Unchained’) could get the gong. Those in the run for best supporting actor are Alan Arkin (‘Argo’), Leonardo DiCaprio (‘Django Unchained’), Phillip Seymour Hoffman (‘The Master’), Tommy Lee Jones (‘Lincoln’) and Christopher Waltz (‘Django Unchained’), while the females competing for the supporting actress award are Amy Adams (‘The Master’), Sally Field (‘Lincoln’), Anne Hathaway (‘Les Miserables’), Helen Hunt (‘The Sessions’) and Nicole Kidman (‘The Paperboy’). Contenders in the best foreign language film are ‘Amour’, ‘A Royal Affair’, ‘The Untouchables’, ‘Rust and Bone’ and ‘Kon-Tiki’. The nominees for the best original score are ‘Life of Pi’ (Mychael Danna), ‘Argo’ (Alexandre Desplat), ‘Anna Karenina’ (Dario Marianelli), ‘Cloud Atlas’ (Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek, Reinhold Heil) and ‘Lincoln’ (John Williams). In the best original song category, the nominations are Keith Urban - ‘For you’ (‘Act of Valor’), Jon Bon Jovi - ‘Not Running Anymore’ (‘Stand Up Guys’), Taylor Swift - ‘Safe and Sound’ (‘The Hunger Games’), Adele - ‘Skyfall’ (‘Skyfall’) and Hugh Jackman - ‘Suddenly’ (‘Les Miserables’). Best animated feature film nominees are ‘Brave’, ‘Frankenweenie’, ‘Rise of the Guardians’, ‘Hotel Transylvania’ and ‘Wreck-It Ralph’. Actress Jodie Foster will be honoured with the Cecil B. de Mille Award for for lifetime achievement. The awards ceremony, to be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, will be held Jan 13, 2013. IANS
