Legends of Tipu Sultan by British artist to be auctioned

The legends of Tipu Sultan depicted through artworks by Henry Singleton along with other antiquities is set to be auctioned soon.

New Delhi: The legends of Tipu Sultan depicted through artworks by the famous British artist Henry Singleton along with other antiquities from Tanjore, Tamil Nadu and Kerala is set to be auctioned soon.
Singleton`s oil sketch ‘The Assault and Taking of Seringapatam’ created in the year 1800 and originally in the collection of Lord Wellesley (The Duke of Wellington) is the highlight of the upcoming sale by auction house Osian in Mumbai on June 21.
The fourth and concluding auction under Osian`s Creative India Series, the sale focuses on Goa, Cholamandel and South India showcasing antiquities and prints on Tipu Sultan and other important artworks. A rare Tanjore company school painting of devotees and the temple car which is part of the India Office library collection in London, is also part of the sale. The original bronze (edition of 3) by modern artist D P Roychowdhury`s famous study of "Gandhiji`s March to Dandi" would also go on the block. Also in the modern art section are three top quality artworks from K C S Paniker`s important Words and Symbols Series, a brilliant fantasy series work by K Ramanujam, two very rare works from J Sultan Ali`s most important work "The Pramannu Darshan Series" are also part of the collection. Munuswamy`s animal series, Dhanapal`s Christ Bearing Cross, Adimoolam`s Gandhi Series, Bhaskaran`s Life Cycle series also find representation in the modern art section. Contemporary artists include Surendran Nair, Riyaz Komu, Vasudha Thozhur, Shibu Natesan, Babu Xavier, R Palianappan and Viraj Naik. The opening preview of the art work will be held on the 9th June 2012. This is the fourth and the last in the Creative India series of auctions that was inaugurated with the art of `Bengal` followed by `The Punjab Hills & Delhi` and `Bombay & Baroda`. Each of these auctions focused on various schools and centers of art that have been pivotal in influencing the evolution of the fine arts in India. Neville Tuli, Founder and Chairman Osian`s says, The Creative India Series has been a success in the sense that it has been able to help us regain our Indian market leadership position, though Christie`s is the global leader.
