New Delhi: Anurag Kashyap is one proud man. And why not? His magnum opus ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur Part 1’ has not only been lauded by the critics but also lapped up by the audience. And as he gets ready to release the second part of GOW on 8th August, the maverick filmmaker and some members of the cast and crew came down to the OSIAN’S Cinefan Film Festival for the special screening of the film.
Post the screening, Anurag along with the leading ladies of the film-Richa Chaddha, Reema Sen and Huma Quereshi and the film’s script writer Zeeshan Qadri addressed the press and spoke about the making of the film. The film, based in Wasseypur near Dhanbad is a revenge drama panning over generations. With a massive cast Anurag said that the film was made over four months and admitted that in his decade long career, he has had the most fun shooting for GOW. When asked if he felt that violence was overplayed in the film, Anurag said, “Yes maybe in the end, but what we showed is reality. I did take some cinematic license, but we more or less stuck to reality.” Didn’t he feel responsible that so much violence would have wrong repercussion on the audience? Anurag gave somewhat a reverse theory and said, “I feel when someone watches too much violence, one withdraws. One is so disgusted and stunned by it that one becomes numb to it. Violence makes you stop, it doesn’t spread.” Referring to the recent firing incident that took place in Colorado, US during the Batman screening, Anurag said,” It is wrong to blame a film or the director for the incident. The government should be blamed for having inept laws which enables citizens to possess guns. “ “Revenge exists all over but it is often not violent. People seek revenge when they are hurt, not because Amitabh Bachchan is doing it on screen”, Kashyap reasoned. While the movie is all about male machismo, the leading ladies said that they enjoyed playing strong characters in the film. “Women play strong roles in the film. In fact they are never props in Anurag’s film,” said Reema Sen, who plays Durga in the film. In fact Anurag was asked when would he make a women oriented film to which he said,” They play very important part of my films. I don’t have weak characters in my films because all the women in my life have been very strong. I don’t like boring women.” The humour element in the film was much appreciated which the director said was actually not intentional. “These things happen there. People take themselves very seriously which itself makes the whole thing hilarious.” Anurag was also excited that four of this films, ‘Gangs of Wasseypur Part I and II’ ‘Miss Lovely ‘and ‘Jayate’ will be screened at Toronto Film festival. Anurag who is known to discover new talent in Bollywood was pretty modest about it and said, “I am just lucky to meet new filmmakers who come to my office with some brilliant ideas which we discuss, interact, share and improvise.”
