‘Forrest Gump’, ‘Bambi’ added to National Film Registry

Washington: Tom Hanks starrer Oscar-winning picture `Forrest Gump` from 1994 will be added to the US National Film Registry along with the Disney classic `Bambi` and Anthony Hopkins` gory thriller `The Silence Of The Lambs`.

The movies are among 25 chosen annually for preservation by the Library of Congress and this year`s list also includes Charlie Chaplin`s first full-length feature `The Kid`, as well as 1953`s `War of the Worlds`, `Porgy and Bess` (1959) and Sally Field`s Oscar-winning 1979 drama `Norma Rae`, reported The Washington Post. "These films are selected because of their enduring significance to American culture. Our film heritage must be protected because these cinematic treasures document our history and culture and reflect our hopes and dreams," said James H Billington, Librarian of Congress. This year`s list includes lesser-known films such as `Allures`, a 1961 study in abstraction by Jordan Belson, and `I, an Actress,` by George and Mike Kuchar. A number of this year`s inductees have to do with social issues, from the documentaries `The Negro Soldier` and `Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment` to the child-labour melodrama `The Cry of the Children` and `The Lost Weekend`, starring Ray Milland as a man battling alcoholism.
