Mumbai: The month of Shravan (also known as savan) in the Hindu calendar is dedicated to Lord Shiva. During this month, devotees offer their prayers to Shiva Bhagwan and keep fasts especially on Mondays. The Mondays ( Somwar) in this month are considered highly auspicious because these are specifically dedicated to the most supreme power of the Hindu trinity.

In north India, people generally adhere to the Purnimant calendar while devotees down south go by the Amavasyant calendar. Hence, the holy month of Shravan (Savan) is celebrated on different dates by people in north and southern part of India.

Here are the important dates in the month of Shravan according to the two different calendars.

According to the calendar followed by Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, the important dates are:

Shravan Month begins on Wednesday -20 July  

The first Somwar is on July 25

The second Somwar is on August 1

The third Somwar is on August 8

The fourth Somwar is on August 15

Shravan month ends on Thursday - August 18.

According to the calendar followed by Gujarat, Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, the important dates are:

Shravan begins on Wednesday - August 3

The first Somwar is on August 8

The second Somwar is on August 15

The third Somwar is on August 22

The fourth Somwar is on August 29

Shravan month ends on Thursday – September 1
