Amal Alamuddin wore Oscar De La Renta for her wedding!

New Delhi: The Sultan of Suave, as he was popularly called—Oscar De La Renta, 82, died a quiet death on Monday, surrounded by his family and close friends. The poised designer, who literally took the fashion world by storm during the 1960s—had a modest list of A-class celebrities and first ladies (including the royalty).

Oscar had more recently designed for the much-talked about wedding of Hollywood actor George Clooney and British-based barrister Amal Alamuddin. In fact, the oh-so-perfect Mrs Clooney wore Oscar De La Renta dress on her D-day. From the then US President John. F. Kenndey's wife Jacqueline Kennedy to the current President Barack Obama's wife, Michelle Obama—all have been designed by the gentleman designer.

The historic period of 1960s-1970s was marked by the brilliance of designers such as De La Renta, who defined the 'haute Couture' collection in a new way. His excellence lied in designing the evening gowns, especially the red carpet wear. His brand of clothing saw emergence in early 2000, when many international celebrities chose to wear his designs for big night events.

Besides, Amal and Michelle Obama—Hillary Rodham Clinton and Laura Bush ( George W Bush's wife) too had Oscar De La Renta on their minds, when making a public appearance. His clientele list was something to be awed at.

The renowned fashion designer was suffering from the deadly disease of cancer. However, in 2006, Oscar during a fashion event, had for the first time spoken about his illness. The reason behind his death is still not clear, although a statement was released by his step daughter Eliza Reed Bolen and her husband.
