Los Angeles: Oscar-winning producer Scott Rudin is developing a new limited series for National Geographic channel on the events that led to the Chernobyl disaster.

The project is based on the forthcoming book "The Invisible Enemy: The Untold Story of the Battle of Chernobyl", written by Adam Higgenbotham, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine (then officially the Ukrainian SSR), which was under the direct jurisdiction of the central authorities of the Soviet Union. An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, which spread over much of the western USSR and Europe.

It is deemed as the worst nuclear power plant accident in history in terms of cost and casualties. Producer Garrett Basch is also involved following reports that he was in talks to run Rudin's TV division.

The 56-year-old producer signed a lucrative three-year deal with Fox Networks Group and it covers Fox Broadcasting, FX Networks and NatGeo.

As a part of the pact, Rudin's projects for NatGeo and FX Networks will be produced by FX Productions.
