Festival of Assamese classics in Delhi

New Delhi: Film lovers in Delhi will have a rare chance to watch several Assamese classics, including National Award winning ones, this month at a festival marking 80 years of cinema in the northeastern state.

"Camera Along the Brahmaputra, Celebrating 80 Years of Assamese Cinema" will screen eight films from April 13-14 and 16-18.

Organised by the India International Centre Film Club in collaboration with Assam Association, Delhi, the festival is curated by filmmaker-critic Utpal Borpujari.

The opening day will see the screening of "Chameli Memsaab", starring now censor board member George Baker.

Directed by Abdul Majid, the film won the National Awards for best music (Bhupen Hazarika) and the best regional movie in Assamese in 1976. 

The other National Award winning films at the festival are Manju Borah's "Ko: Yad" (A Silent Way) (In Mising language); Jahnu Barua's debut film "Aparoopa"; "Aideu ? Behind the Screen", Arup Manna's take on the first Assamese actress Aideu Handique; and Hemanta Kumar Das' "Othello: We Too Have Our Othellos", which bagged the Best Assamese film prize this year.

The other films to be screened at the festival are "Dwaar--The Voyage Out" by Bidyut Chakravarty; "Raag ? The Rhythm of Love" by Rajni Basumatary, and "Ekhon Nedekha Nodir Xhipare" by Bidyut Kotoky.
