Review ‘Khichdi - The Movie’ is a mindless laugh riot

Making popular sitcoms into movies is a popular practice abroad but for the very first time a much-loved TV show ‘Khichdi-The Movie’ has been adapted into a film in India. And the movie lives upto the mindless image of the show. But not in an awkward sense of course. ‘Khichdi’ with its entire daily soap cast is a senseless laugh riot that is bound to leave you with a smile on your face. But before we dwell into the storyline, here is a word of praise for director Aatish Kapadia, for not making too many changes in the script. The film stays very close to the bumpkin characters created for the show. Thus, the magic generated on the audience remains the same. The gags, though, are a bit amateur, they are funny nevertheless. As for the film, the plot revolves around Himanshu, who wants to have a memorable love story but doesn’t have a girl. Fortunately for him, his neighbour Parminder (Krithi Kulhari), who too is going through the same phase, falls in love with him and they get engaged. Everything is fine till lighting strikes Himanshu and he realises that he doesn’t have a eventful love life. Not having a conflict or separation from his lover, makes him feel worthless. However when the entire family learns of Himanshu’s yearning they decided to make his love story truly memorable. And this is what forms the theme of the film. Trying to make his love story a memorable one, the entire family ends up creating roadblocks for him. But the film is one clean comedy with no double meaning. Supriya Pathak, Majethia, Rajeev Mehta and Anang Desai are all in their best element. New additions like Nimisha Vakharia (as Jayshree) and Kirti Kulhari (as Parminder) are able to add zing to the movie. However, the drawback of the movie is that it relies too much on gags. What’s more is that the director tries too hard to make people laugh and that ends up spoiling the charm of the movie. Rating: In all three cheers for this one!
