Shiv Sena leader Sudhir Suri shot dead in Punjab’s Amritsar, accused arrested

Shiv Sena leader Sudhir Suri was shot dead by unidentified people in Punjab's Amritsar on Friday, police said. The incident took place outside Gopal Mandir on Majitha Road, one of the busiest places in the city where Suri and some other leaders of the party were holding a protest, they said.

New Delhi: Sudhir Suri, a Shiv Sena leader, was killed on Friday after being shot near Gopal Mandir in Amritsar during an agitation. Suri was rushed to the hospital shortly after the incident, where he died. At the time of the incident, CCTV showed the presence of police on the scene. Eyewitnesses described how the incident occurred. Suri was shot five times, according to police, before collapsing. He was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries. According to local media, the crowd apprehended the alleged attacker and handed him over to police. Sandeep Singh has been identified as the suspected attacker.

In response to the incident, Punjab BJP president Ashwani Sharma stated that the state's law and order situation has completely collapsed. Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav said, "He succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. FIR registered u/s 302 (murder) and accused Sandeep Singh Sunny was taken into custody from the spot itself. His interrogation is underway. The situation in Amritsar is fully under control. The accused has been arrested”

Gaurav Yadav added, “Sudhir Suri was on a sit-in protest over a dispute of Gopal Mandir management. The assailant has a garment shop there. He fired bullets from his licensed .32 bore-revolver, some of which hit Suri and he was taken to hospital immediately”
