Srinagar: The authorities on Thursday closed at least 85 schools as heavy shelling from the Pakistani side continued along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir's in Nowshera and Manjkote sectors.

In view of the cross-border shelling, locals residents of the area have also been shifted to safer places.  

Giving more information about the situation, Rajouri District Collector told ANI, ''We have started alternative classes at relief camps and shifted higher secondary schools to Government Degree College.''

The authorities are also running make shift classes at relief camps and other places.

In the past one week, at least 8 incidents of ceasefire violations were reported.

More than 8,000 people have been directly affected by Pakistani shelling in just past two days. 

Cross-border shelling from the Pakistani side has so far claimed the lives of six soldiers, three civilians and left at least 18 others seriously injured during this month.

Shashi Kumar, a Junior Commissioned Officer, who sustained serious injuries in the Nowshera sector on the Line of Control recently, died on Wednesday. 

Army jawan Jaspreet Singh was also martyred in the Pakistani shelling in Naushera sector in Rajouri district on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Indian Army has been giving a befitting reply to Pakistan in view of ceasefire violations by its troops. Two Pakistani soldiers were also reportedly killed by the Indian troops in retaliatory firing earlier this week.
