Mumbai: A day after the Tuesday deluge which claimed five lives, Mumbai struggled on Wednesday to get back on its feet, with many thousands reaching their homes after being stranded for over 24 hours.

Thousands struggled to reach their homes on Wednesday morning - instead of rushing to work as is the usual weekday scenario for Mumbai`s eight million plus commuters.

Mumbaikars alleged that the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), India`s richest civic body with an annual budget of over Rs 25,000 crore and cash reserves of over Rs 61,000 crore, totally let down the citizens who battled all odds to survive and remain safe or unhurt.

The Santacruz observatory of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) here registered 331.4 mm rainfall on Tuesday, the heaviest since the July 26, 2005 record of 944 mm, which had caused the worst havoc in decades in the city.

This is also the highest rainfall in a day in August since 1997.

It was second only to 346.2 mm of rainfall registered on August 23, 1997, the data showed.

BMC commissioner Ajoy Mehta said, "The quantum of rainfall was extremely high. We had 325 mm of rainfall and there were almost 26 locations where the rainfall exceeded 250mm. So, it was one of the highest unprecedented rainfalls. More than that there are two things we need to see that how fast Mumbai came back to normal which was really unprecedented, it was something that was beyond the infrastructure of Mumbai."

Central Railways train services updates: 

First train left the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) for Kalyan at 7.26 am. 

Services on other sections like Kalyan to Karjat, Kalyan to Titwala and Thana to Kalyan were also operational.

Due to water-logging at Kurla, it may take some more time for the Harbour line trains to get back on track. This line is also operated by the Central Railways. 

Services on suburban corridor of the Western Railway (WR) are also back on track. Trains on this section resumed around midnight last night and more services were started around 7 am.

Speed restriction imposed at Matunga Road station from the safety point of view.
