On a weekly basis, the BSE managed to close with gains for the fifth straight week by rising 15.53 points, or 0.04 percent. NSE too ended up 51.90 points, or 0.51 percent.

The BSE Sensex closed 87.53 points or 0.27 up to 32,325.41 on the other hand the NSE Nifty ended 52.75 points or 0.53 percent up to 10,066.40.

Banking, healthcare and FMCG stocks weighed heavy on markets today as the Sensex faltered and the Nifty dropped below the key 10,000-mark in early session.

Healthcare, FMCG, banking, power and auto indices were all in the loss zone, down by up to 1.67 percent. The indices were pulled lower mostly by Sun Pharma, Lupin, Dr Reddy's, Cipla, ONGC and Reliance Industries.

The Sensex touched a high of 32,241.71 points and a low of 32,170.19 points in the trade so far.

The 30-scrip Sensitive Index Sensex was trading 26.69 points or 0.08 percent lower during the early session. The wider 51-scrip Nifty of the National Stock Exchange NSE was also trading 9.45 points or 0.09 percent lower at 10,004.20 points.

The rupee appreciated by 9 paise to 63.60 against the US dollar today on continued foreign capital inflows. Yesterday, the rupee had ended little changed at 63.69 -- its highest level in 2 years -- as RBI intervention in the foreign exchange market mopped up excess dollar liquidity.

The BSE Sensex opened at 32,191.12 points while the NSE Nifty opened at 10,008.60.

Asian stocks inched up on Friday after a technology-led drop on Wall Street. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.2 percent.

The index was poised to climb 0.3 percent for the week, taking its gains for far this year to nearly 24 percent.

Japan's Nikkei dropped 0.3 percent on a stronger yen, and looked set to end the week little changed.

South Korea's KOSPI, which closed at a 3-1/2-week low on Thursday, recovered 0.3 percent. It is down 0.4 percent this week.

China's blue-chip CSI 300 lost 0.3 percent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.1 percent.

Overnight, the S&P and Nasdaq closed 0.2 percent and 0.35 percent lower respectively, with the declines led by technology shares. But the Dow managed to post slight gains, staying above the 22,000 level breached on Wednesday.
