Brain dead person's organs transplanted at PGIMER

Chandigarh: In a boost to the organ transplantation efforts in the region, Army's Command Hospital here today shared liver and kidneys of a brain dead person with New Delhi-based Army Hospital and the PGIMER in the city.

After the family of the victim, who was declared brain dead following a road accident, decided to offer the organs for transplant, two teams of surgeons from the Command Hospital, Chandimandir and the PGIMER swung into action to retrieve them, a PGIMER release said.

The liver was airlifted from the Command hospital in Chandimandir to Army Hospital Research and Referral, New Delhi, Dr Ashish Sharma, Additional Professor, Department of Renal Transplant Surgery of the PGIMER said.

Both kidneys were brought to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research where they have been transplanted in patients, he said.

This is the first time the PGIMER has received organs retrieved at another hospital. The surgeries commenced early in the morning after the kidneys were delivered, he said.

"Two patients of chronic renal failure who were on prolonged dialysis received the two kidneys. The transplant surgeries are complete without any complications so far," Dr Sharma said.

Organ sharing is a complex operation which require close co-ordination between teams of surgeons, their assistants, transplantation co-ordinators and the hospital administration, he said.

"The success of the current effort is expected to encourage more organ sharing between hospitals of the region," he added.
