Asaram is in jail in connection with a rape case

New Delhi: Self-style godman Asaram, or Asaram Bapu as he is fondly called by his followers, is trending on Twitter on Wednesday.

Asaram, who has been in jail since August 2013 in connection with separate rape and sexual misconduct cases, has been repeatedly denied bail by courts.

As per a PTI report, a teenaged girl of Asaram’s Chindwara-based gurukul had accused him of sexual assault at his ashram near Jodhpur. The girl from Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, was the student of Asaram's ashram and had been allegedly advised to come to Jodhpur in the name of some treatment. Following her complaint against Asaram, he was arrested by Jodhpur Police on August 31, 2013 and is in jail since then.

His followers have now taken to social network Twitter to demand bail for their 'guru'.

The hashtag #WeUrgeBailForBapuji is one of the top trends on Twitter right now.

The development comes weeks after Asaram's followers apprised Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the case.
