'Azadi' slogans at Amnesty event: Digvijay Singh says raising slogans not a fit case to be charged with Sedition

New Delhi: As the row over sedition case slapped against Amnesty International India intensifies, Congress leader Digvijay Singh on Wednesday said, simply raising slogans is not a fit case to be charged with the draconian law.

Commenting on the issue, Singh tweeted: “Simply raising slogans is not a fit case to be charged with Sedition. It is a law which British used against our Leaders in Freedom Movement.”

The Congress leader said Karnataka Chief Minister S Siddaramaiah has assured him that no arrests would be made till the probe is completed.

Notably, Bengaluru Police Commissioner NS Megharikh has confirmed that `Azadi` (freedom) slogans were raised at a cultural programme Amnesty organised on alleged human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir.

The FIR has been registered under IPC sections-- 142 (being member of an unlawful assembly), 143 (whoever is a member of an unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony).

Amnesty organised the programme -- `Broken Families` -- which had an interactive discussion on peace and justice in Kashmir and where three families from the strife-torn valley shared human rights violations they faced with the rest of India.

The issue came to limelight after activists of the ABVP, an affiliate of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, on Sunday protested against the anti-India slogans allegedly raised at a human rights event.
