SC to hear matter of improving current state of prisons, inmates today

Since 2013, the Supreme Court has been hearing a suo motu case involving inhuman conditions in 1,382 prisons in India. 

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday will hear the matter related to improve the living conditions of inmates in jails across the country, which include overcrowding, delay in trial, custodial deaths, inadequacy of staff, insubstantial food and inadequate clothing among other concerns.

On February 5, the apex court had issued significant directives to all the states in an order, which included proper and effective utilization of available funds so that the living conditions of the prisoners is commensurate with `human dignity`.

During the hearing, the court also observed that despite the various discussions and decisions by them regarding this issue over the last 35 years, they are still struggling with resolution of this problem.
