Chennai: A private medical college here suspended two of its students on Wednesday after they were earlier in the day arrested and subsequently released on bail for throwing a dog from a terrace.

While Gowtham Sudarshan was seen in a video hurling the dog from the terrace of a building here, his friend Ashish Pal was alleged to have filmed the act.

The shocking video had gone viral on social media and drew widespread outrage.

Meanwhile, the dog is reported to be "doing well" and is undergoing treatment at a veterinary hospital.

"We arrested Gowtham Sudarshan and Ashish Pal today and they were produced before Sriperumbudur Judicial Magistrate court," Kundrathur Police Inspector Ruban said. "The duo were granted bail by the court," he told PTI.

Gowtham Sudarshan is a final year MBBS student at the private medical college.

Animal welfare activists, including Antony Clement Rubin and Jennifer Jacob, had filed a police complaint after the video was widely shared on social media.

The accused duo were located after a search and booked for cruel treatment meted out to an animal under IPC Sections 428 and 429 and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (Sec 11(1-A)).

"It (the dog) has suffered fractures in its front and rear legs. It is being treated," Rubin told PTI.

"It is nothing short of a miracle that the dog survived," he added.

Rubin said the dog has been named Bhadra after goddess Bhadrakali.
