Mumbai: A 50-year-old man was awarded death sentence by a sessions court here on Friday in connection with a 2011 case of rape and murder of a minor girl.

The court convicted Saheb Kamble and awarded capital punishment for raping and killing the seven-year-old girl in Goregaon.

Kamble and the victim were neighbours residing in Goregaon. On October 28, 2011, he asked the girl to go to a local shop and get betel-nut. When the girl bought it, Kamble took her inside his house and raped her. After raping her, he strangled the girl and kept her body hidden beneath the cot at his house, police said.

Meanwhile when the victim`s mother started searching for her, she saw her daughter`s footwear outside Kamble`s house. When her mother went to his house, she found her daughter`s body lying under the cot.

The prosecution examined 65 witnesses, including the mother of the girl to prove the case.

The court accepted the prosecution`s case and awarded death penalty to Kamble.
According to Goregaon police, this was the second rape case registered against Kamble. He had been acquitted in the first case earlier.
