Mumbai: The Haji Ali Dargah Trust on Monday approached the Supreme Court to challenge the Bombay High Court verdict that recently allowed the entry of women into the inner sanctum of the 14th century monument.
The trust had banned the entry of women in 2012 citing religious traditions. Women's activists termed it as regressive and “sexist” in nature.
The issue hit the headlines once again this year after Bhumata Brigade activist president Trupti Desai and her associates tried to storm the premises.
The police, however, stopped their march.
Desai had successfully convinced other social rights NGOs to rally behind her until their demands were met.
The Bombay HC had asked the state to ensure safety and security of women entering the inner sanctum of Haji Ali.
