Cold wave unabated in north; fog disrupts normal life

Chandigarh, Jan 04: Mercury hovered one to three degree Celsius below normal at several places in northern states today which continued to shiver in the intense cold wave sweeping the region even as a thick blanket of fog hit rail, road and air traffic.

Met office said most places in Punjab, Haryana and
Chandigarh recorded temperature one to three degrees below
normal. While Amritsar was the coldest with a low of 1.2
degree Celsius, Chandigarh recorded 5.4 degrees Celisus, two
below normal.

Hisar registered a low of 4.2 degrees, Ludhiana 4.4
degrees, Ambala 4.5 degrees and Karnal 5 degree Celsius, all
below normal.

A thick fog stranded vehicles at national highways and
state highways at several places including Bathinda,
Pathankot, Ludhiana, Patiala, Jalandhar, Karnal, Ambala,
Sirsa, Hisar and Sonipat.

Several long distance and suburban trains on the
Delhi-Ambala-Kalka sections were running several hours behind
schedule, railway sources said.

Many schools in the region have been shut down till
January 10 due to inclement weather.

Cold winds swept several areas of Uttar Pradesh with
Kanpur recording a low of 5 degree Celsius. A dense fog added
to the woes of the residents affecting normal life.
