Review: Rishi Kapoor’s ‘Chintu Ji’ will bring a smile on your face

Well, none of us have ever underestimated Rishi Kapoor’s acting talent but yes one can’t get over his ‘pullover in summer’ days too. But this fifty something actor is not someone you can ignore. The actor, who just gave us a glimpse of his mettle in ‘Luck By Chance’ and ‘Love Aaj Kal’, has given one hell of a performance in ‘Chintu Ji’. Directed by Ranjit Kapoor, ‘Chintu Ji’, is a definite winner.

Well, none of us have ever underestimated Rishi Kapoor’s acting talent but yes one can’t get over his ‘pullover in summer’ days too. But this fifty something actor is not someone you can ignore. The actor, who just gave us a glimpse of his mettle in ‘Luck By Chance’ and ‘Love Aaj Kal’, has given one hell of a performance in ‘Chintu Ji’.Directed by Ranjit Kapoor, ‘Chintu Ji’, which according to Rishi is part fiction and part reality, is a definite winner. It comes across as a heart warming and a feel good film that is bound to bring a smile on your face. What’s working for this one is perhaps the fact that it wasn’t publicised well, hence there aren’t any expectations. It’s a pure surprise.
The story, set in a fictitious village Hadbahedi is about ‘Chintu Ji’, a superstar (played by Rishi Kapoor), who plans to fight an election from that place. The village is no less than a unique place, where every resident is a simple, clear-hearted soul. The villagers are on a desperate lookout for famous face, who can promote the positive values of Hadbahedi across India. Chintu Ji is game for the same; he plans to take advantage of their simplicity and projects himself as the face of the village. The villagers go all out to please their favourite star giving into even his most ridiculous demands. Sensing his popularity, Chintu Ji is lured by a rival village to dupe his own people in exchange for a lot of money. This clash of morals forms the basis of a rather interesting plot. ‘Chintu Ji’ starts to be a simple tale about good values but touches one’s heart for its simplicity and truthfulness. It can be called a satire on Indian celebrities culture. The direction is excellent, dialogues- fabulous. The songs could’ve been a no-no. Apart from the overdose of drama at the end, everything else seems just perfect. Saurabh Shukla, Priyanshu Chatterjee and debutante Kulraj Randhawa, all gel well with the plot. But to sum it up, ‘Chintu Ji’ is purely about Chintu Ji (Rishi) indeed. He is flawless and makes you realize that age has nothing to do with acting. Catch this one, it’s definitely worth the money. Rating: Three stars.
