New Delhi: Noted Sarangi player and classical singer Ustad Sultan Khan is no more.
Khan, an exponent in Hindustani classical music was one of the members of the Indian fusion group Tabla Beat Science, with famous table player Zakir Hussain and American bassist Bill Laswell. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, in 2010. Khan started learnt music from his father Gulab Khan. The Indore Gharana singer and sarangi player gave his first performance at the All-India Conference at the age of 11. He has performed on an international scale with Ravi Shankar on George Harrison`s 1974 Dark Horse World Tour. He had also contributed vocals and sarangi to Gavin Harrison`s 1998 solo album Sanity & Gravity. His most popular Bollywood song was "Albela sajan aayo re..."along with Shanker Mahadevan in the movie "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" in 1999. Khan was also invited to perform at the 50th birthday celebration of Prince Charles in 1997. He has won numerous musical awards including, twice, the Sangeet Natya Academy Award along with the Gold Medalist Award of Maharashtra and the American Academy of Artists Award in 1998. The husky and refreshing voice of this veteran would be missed by fans.
