New Delhi, Apr 07: Terrorism and the security situation in South Asia and Central Asia are expected to figure prominently during talks visiting Russian Deputy
Foreign Minister Anatoly Safonov will have with Indian leaders here tomorrow.

Safonov, who arrived today, will head an inter-agency
Russian delegation for the annual meeting of the India-Russia working group for countering international terrorism.

Russia has voiced strong concern over the recent
terrorist attacks in Uzbekistan in which 22 persons were
killed and several wounded. The Uzbek authorities have accused radical Islamists linked to al Qaeda of masterminding the strikes.

India, itself a victim of terrorism, condemned the
attacks and reinforced its commitment to fight the menace
unitedly through collective efforts of the international
community.

In a letter to Uzbek Foreign Minister Sadik Salikhovich
Safayev, External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha said India and Uzbekistan had been resolute in condemning terrorism in all its manifestations.

Ahead of his visit, Safonov stressed the need for further
steps by Pakistan to check cross-border terrorism and
liquidate terrorist infrastructure.
