New Delhi, May 27: Human rights violations in Uttar Pradesh would be under close scanner as the Supreme Court has rejected the state government's plea to dissolve the court appointed committee on the issue and said it would, for the present, function along with the State Human Rights Commission.
A bench comprising Justice R C Lahoti and Justice Ashok Bhan had earlier this month said that it would not dissolve the human rights committee headed by Justice (Retd) A K Srivastava despite the government pleading that there was no need of two set ups - the committee and the commission - working on the same issue.
The bench made it clear that while the committee would
continue to investigate the pending human rights violation
complaints, the State Human Rights Commission would look into
the fresh complaints.
Amicus Curiae Suruchii Aggarwal contended that the committee had done an 'excellent' work in bringing forward several cases of human rights violation and it should be continued to look into the cases it was investigating.
The bench then asked the registrar general of the Supreme Court to find out from the secretary of the UP State Human Rights Commission whether the commission had become fully functional and getting all required cooperation from the state government.
