Patna, Aug 09: Bihar Police chief today denied allegations that fugitive RJD MP Mohammed Shahabuddin was not being arrested under pressure from RJD President Laloo Prasad Yadav and said there was urgent need to probe the MP's links with inter-state and international criminal gangs.
"We are working independently. We don't have to arrest
Shahabuddin or allow him to roam free under anybody's
pressure. We are working according to the law," Bihar Director
General of Police D P Ojha, who had issued orders for the MP's
arrest on July 30 in a case of alleged kidnapping and
suspected murder, told a press conference here.

However, Bihar police does not so far have any concrete
evidence of Shahabuddin's anti-national activities, he said.

He said he had on august one asked the state government
to recommend a CBI inquiry into a bank robbery in March this
year at Gopalganj by miscreants allegedly patronised by the
Siwan MP as also his links with inter-state and international
gangs.

"I expect a response from the government soon. We have
information that Shahabuddin has close links with crime
syndicates in Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai and some places outside
India, but as of now we don't have any evidence to suggest
that he is involved in anti-national activities," he said.

He also brushed aside allegations by some ruling RJD
legislators that the police action against Shahabuddin was
motivated. Shahabuddin had himself accused the DGP of being an
agent of the BJP eyeing a gubernatorial post or preparing to
contest the next Lok Sabha election after retirement.
