New Delhi: Concerned over spurt in prices
of essential commodities, Congress President Sonia Gandhi has
written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh amidst
demands from the party that the government should take
concrete steps to check the price line.

The letter was written before the Congress Working
Committee (CWC) meeting on August 19 when the highest-policy
making forum had discussed the issue of drought in several
parts of the country and resultant price hike, party sources
said today.

In the CWC meeting also, Gandhi had wondered why the
retail prices of essential commodities have risen when the
wholesale price index was showing a downward trend and the
inflation was down.

The CWC had asked the government to take proactive
steps for controlling prices and action against hoarders.

Meanwhile, Congress today snubbed senior leader
Satyavrat Chaturvedi for his attack on Agriculture Minister
Sharad Pawar over handling of the drought situation and asked
partymen "not to express their so-called personal views in
public".

Distancing the party from Chaturvedi`s remarks, AICC
media department chairman Janardan Dwivedi said "whatever the
party had to say on the drought situation and other related
issues, it has said through the CWC resolution.
