Winners of by-poll elections

New Delhi, June 02: Ruling BJP today suffered rout in the prestigious Dumka Lok Sabha seat in Jharkhand but its allies fared better in the bypolls with BSP retaining Akbarpur parliamentary seat and wresting an assembly seat from Samajawadi Party in Uttar Pradesh and BJD snatching an assembly seat from Congress in Orissa.

New Delhi, June 02: Ruling BJP today suffered rout in the prestigious Dumka Lok Sabha seat in Jharkhand but its allies fared better in the bypolls with BSP retaining Akbarpur parliamentary seat and wresting an assembly seat from Samajawadi Party in Uttar Pradesh and BJD snatching an assembly seat from Congress in Orissa.

Telugu Desam Party, a key outside supporter of NDA, retained Amalapuram parliamentary seat with late Lok Sabha speaker G M C Balayogi's widow Vijayakurmari defeating J B Raju of BSP by a huge margin of over three lakh votes.
With all results of bypolls to three Lok Sabha and 11 assembly seats available, ruling AIADMK maintained its supremacy wresting two assembly seats from DMK and its ally
PMK while Laloo Prasad Yadav-led RJD held its sway in Bihar retaining both the assembly seats.

Of the three assembly seats in UP, BSP bagged Jehangirganj and wrested Baheri from SP while Kalyan Singh-led Rashtriya Kranti Party won the Dibai seat.

NCP romped home in Jalgaon assembly constituency in Maharashtra, Congress retained the Narasimharaja Vidhan Sabha seat in Karnataka and Forward Bloc won the Onda Assembly seat in West Bengal.

JMM leader Sibu Soren emerged triumphant in Dumka wresting the seat from BJP whose nominee Ramesh Hembrom lost by a margin of 94, 235 votes.

The Dumka seat fell vacant following Babulal Marandi's resignation after becoming chief minister of Jharkhand.

The counting of ballots in Saidapet assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu was kept in abeyance till completion of inquiry into opposition's allegations of large-scale rigging.

BJP-BSP backed independent candidate emerged victorious
in the Kunda Assembly constituency in Uttar Pradesh where re-balloting was held along with bypolls in the state on May 31.

The re-polling was ordered following complaints of large-scale irregularities in the constituency during assembly polls in February last.

BSP's Tribhuvan Dutt bagged the Akbarpur Lok Sabha seat, vacated by chief minister Mayawati, by a margin of over 31,000 votes.

Former UP Chief Minister Kalyan Singh's son and RKP nominee Rajbeer Singh romped home from Dibai Assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh by over 13,000 votes.

The ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu continued to hold its sway over the electorate with both its nominees winning Vaniyambadi and Acharapakkam assembly seats with comfortable margins.

By wresting these two seats, the strength of the AIADMK in the 234-member assembly had gone up to 134.

In Bihar, RJD nominee Ramanand Yadav trounced his nearest BJP rival Satnarain Singh Yadav by a margin of 58,007 votes in Danapur assembly bypoll while Gauri Shanker Sardar (RJD) defeated Vishwamohan Bharti of JD (U) by a slender margin of 237 votes in Chhatapur.

The Danapur bypoll was necessitated after RJD supremo Laloo Prasad Yadav vacated the seat following his election to Rajya sabha.

NCP's Suresh Jain emerged triumphant from Jalgaon assembly constituency in Maharashtra defeating Prof Chandrakant Sonawane of Shiv Sena-BJP combine by 2,552 votes.

Jain won the seat for the seventh consecutive time. Earlier, he had won in 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 1996 and 1999 on Congress-S, Congress-I and Shiv Sena tickets.

The ruling Congress in Karnataka retained Narasimharaja assembly seat in Mysore with its candidate Tanveer Sait defeating Janata Parivar's Maruti Rao Pawar by a margin of
over 11,700 votes.

Forward Bloc, a constituent of ruling Left Front in West Bengal, retained Onda assembly seat when its candidate Tarapada Chakraborty humbled Trinamool Congress' Sabyasachi Banerjee by 63,267 votes.
