Sikh students body seeks religious congregation on SGPC issue

A Sikh students outfit today urged Akal Takhat, the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, to convene a religious congregation over the issue of Haryana Government`s proposed decision to set up a separate Shiromani Gurudwara Parbhandhak Committee (SGPC).

President of All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF), Karnail Singh Peer Mohammed said that a section of members of the Sikh community wanted a separate SGPC in Haryana for which a convention has been called on July 6 at Kaithal.

SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar has already opposed the proposed decision of the Haryana Government.


Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal too had urged the centre to desist Haryana Government from setting up a separate SGPC.

Mohammed said that a delegation of AISSF would meet Akal takhat head Gurbachan Singh on June 23 seeking convention of a religious congregations to listen to the grievances of Sikhs from different parts of country.


Besides, the congregation would deliberate on All India Sikh Gurudwara Act and the Nanakshahi calendar issue, he said.
