SC judge to probe Pak journalist’s murder: Rehman Malik

Islamabad: A sitting Pakistan Supreme Court judge will investigate the brutal murder of Pakistani journalist Syed Saleem Shahzad, Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said.

Last week, the prominent investigative reporter had published an article alleging that al-Qaeda had infiltrated the Pakistan Navy and carried out the recent attack on a naval air base.

On Tuesday, Shahzad’s body- with signs of torture- was found in a canal 100 miles from his home in Islamabad, two days after he disappeared.

Journalists and human rights activists have said they believe that Shahzad’s killing was payback not from militants, but from Pakistan’s fearsome spy agencies that had reportedly threatened Shahzad.

“The government will announce the constitution of inquiry commission within two days, as the summary in this regard has already been moved,” the Dawn quoted the Interior Minister, as telling a Pakistani news agency.

The people involved in the killing of Shahzad would be brought to justice soon, Malik added.
