New Delhi: A mysterious, pyramid-shaped mountain has been discovered on the surface of dwarf planet Ceres.

The structure was spotted by NASA's Dawn spacecraft that is currently circling the dwarf planet.

The new image was taken from a distance of about 2,700 miles from the planet's surface.

This is not the first discovery on the dwarf planet. Earlier, mysterious bright spots were also located on the surface of the dwarf planet.

The mysterious bright spots appear as an array of dots scattered across the floor of a crater but the source still remains unknown. At least eight spots can be seen in the largest bright area, which scientists are thinking is approximately six miles wide.

Scientist also believe that a highly reflective material is responsible for the spots, with ice and salt being the leading possibilities.

Dawn’s imaging passes also revealed that small mountains on the dwarf planet’s surface, that are nestled among Ceres’ many craters, rise about 3 miles high.

Dwarf planet Ceres is the largest object in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Dawn is NASA's first mission to visit a dwarf planet, and it arrived at Ceres on March 6.
