The floods also inundated some 94,597 houses, 205,000 hectares of rice fields and 1,000 hectares of plantations, assistant to the coordinating minister for economic affairs, Mahendra Siregar, has said.
He said the abnormal precipitation from late October 2001 to early February 2002 caused floods in 92 different areas in 23 provinces in the country.
"To handle the impacts of floods, the government has adopted long-term and short-term emergency programs," he said. The programs include the repair of roads and the rehabiliation of other public facilities, he said.
