American duo wins Nobel chemistry prize

Stockholm, Oct 08: Americans Peter Agre and Roderick MacKinnon today won the 2003 Nobel Prize for Chemistry prize for cell membrane discoveries providing crucial insights into many diseases afflicting humanity, the Nobel jury said.

The pair's research is particularly valuable for illnesses affecting the kidneys, heart, muscles and nervous system.
"Peter Agre and Roderick MacKinnon have contributed to fundamental chemical knowledge on how cells function. They have opened our eyes to a fantastic family of molecular machines," the Nobel jury said.
