New Delhi: NASA announced on Wednesday that it is planning to send its R5 humanoid robot, also known as Valkyrie, to Mars and even into deeper space locations.
NASA originally designed the R5 robot, which stands at 6 feet tall and weighs 290 pound, for disaster relief operations, but now the space agency intends to see it as a potential tool for other extraterrestrial locations.
So, the space agency will send two Valkyrie robots to college for intensive research and development in extreme environments. For this, NASA has chosen two colleges. One of the robots will go to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the other will go to Northeastern University in Boston.
The two universities were selected through the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Robotics Challenge and each will receive an annual funding of $250,000 for two years.
