I still prefer to have toss in Test cricket: Steve Waugh

Bengaluru: Former Australia captain Steve Waugh on Monday denied of backing fellow countryman Ricky Ponting's demand of getting rid of toss before a Test match, stating that he would prefer the system to remain as it is.

Recently it was reported in a section that Waugh is against spin of coin but the former great said that he was taken out of context.

"Someone asked me about the toss off-the-cuff. I said I prefer to see the toss to stay as it is. I was taken out of context. What I said was it is not a bad idea, but still prefer having a toss," Waugh said during a promotional event.

Ponting, during the Ashes series in England, had suggested to do away with toss and give powers to the visiting side taking a call on who bats first to counteract any advantage the hosts may gain from preparing a pitch that suits them best.

Waugh said he supported Miandad, Pakistani great, who opposed calls given by Ponting and Holding to do away with toss.

"I agree with Javed Miandad. If you are a good player, you should be able to handle conditions, no matter what they present," he said.

The former Pakistan captain had advised the ICC against banning the spin of coin.
