1st Test, Day 3: Warner slams ton after Johnson's impressive seven-wicket haul

Doolan fell 11 runs short of what would have been a magnificent ton on Test debut. Michael Clarke is the new man in and the skipper himself would want to score some runs. Australia now lead by 450 runs with seven wickets remaining. The wicket ended the 205-run partnership between Warner and Doolan. Shaun Marsh is the new man in, and he would want to continue his good run against the Proteas, after having score 148 runs in the first innings. The South Africans rarely have a bad day at the field, and today's has been a forgettable one for them. This partnership is now worth 170 runs and South Africa have nobody else to blame but themselves. Doolan too score his maiden half-century in Tests and he too has been impressive right from the first innings. The left-hander has been extremely unfortunate today as he was gifted three lives by the South Africans. Australia now lead by 318 runs with nine wickets remaining. Warner made a positive start after lunch when he smashed Steyn for three boundaries in the very first over. But the hosts also failed to capitalise on the few opportunities which came their way. Warner was dropped on two occasions - first when he mistimed a pull shot off Philander towards deep fine leg where Dean Elgar got under the ball and grassed it at the last moment. The second chance was when Morkel bowled a short ball which took a thick edge and flew towards slips where Petersen failed to hold on to the catch. Australia now have a huge lead of 257 runs with nine wickets in hand. Johnson picks his seventh wicket in form of Morne Morkel who was caught at slips for a first-ball duck! South Africa lost three more wickets in the last ten overs, including one of AB de Villiers who was looking to go after every delivery. Mitchell Johnson bowled a slower one to AB, which had width on offer and AB slapped that towards mid off where David Warner timed his jump to perfection and took a good catch. It was a very well played innings from AB, who was unhappy with the shot that got him out. Australia have a massive lead of 191 runs! Johnson has claimed yet another five-wicket haul! Vernon Philander is the new man in. AB is fighting a lone battle for his team at the moment and he will have to do the most of the scoring now. South Africa now trail by 229 runs with three wickets in hand. RJ Peterson c Clarke b Johnson 10 (23b) ============================================================== The Australians continued their dominance on Day 2 of the first Test match as a result of a terrific bowling spell from speedster Mitchell Johnson. Johnson who bowled several brutal spells against England in the Ashes, proved a point that his performance wasn`t a fluke as he ripped through the Proteas top order. Johnson dismissed both the openers - Graeme Smith and Alviro Petersen - and also scalped the wickets of Faf du Plessis and Ryan McLaren. Peter Siddle and Nathan Lyon too picked one wicket each as the visitors left the hosts reeling at 140/6. South African innings now depends a lot on AB de Villiers who was unbeaten on 52 when rain stopped play on Day 2. AB was involved in a 67-run partnership with JP Duminy who once again failed to convert a good start into a big score. South Africa still trail by 257 runs with four wickets remaining.
