The film faced a nationwide protest and resistance from fringe groups demanding a ban on the release of the venture.

Rajput outfit Shri Karni Sena accused the filmmaker of wrongly presenting the titular character of Rani Padmini and claimed that Sanjay Leela Bhansali has distorted historical facts. All of this hullaballoo without really watching the film. Death threats were issued to the filmmaker and the lead actress Deepika Padukone demanding a full ban on the release of the film.

However, after braving all the odds, Padmaavat got a green signal from the Central Board Of Film Certification (CBFC) and will finally see the light of the day on January 25, 2018. After Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana stalled the film release, the makers were left with no choice but to seek Supreme Court's intervention.

The SC ruled out in the favour of the film producers stating that no state has the right to impose a ban on the movie. Following the apex court breather to the movie makers, a plea challenging the order was filed by lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma.

However, the SC refused to admit a plea which claimed that the Censor Board certificate issued to historical drama Padmaavat was illegal.
