CBDT to look into high value transactions to trace tax evaders

New Delhi: In order to identify tax evaders, the Income Tax department on Friday said it will use 360 degree profiling and match the database of people filing returns with those of informations about high value transactions.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes has received one crore information through the Non-Filers Management System (NMS), and more than 50 lakh tax payers were added and about Rs 7,000 crore taxes were collected, CBDT Chairman Atulesh Jindal said.

“We have a very robust non-filers management system, under which we are matching the information which is being received from various sources (credit & debit cards, others).

“We get information about high-value transaction and this information is matched with our existing database of who is filing returns of income. On that basis the computer generates list of non-filers and stop-filers,” he told reporters.

At the end of the two day annual conference of tax administrators, Jindal said this year the CBDT has further expanded the areas from which informations are being received.

“Our emphasis will be to broaden this NMS system so that we have more robust data base, on the basis of which we have more widening of tax base,” he said, adding that the department would use non-intrusive method for widening of tax base.

Further, the CBDT will launch a comprehensive integrated grievance redressal system called ‘e-Nivaran’ and a pilot project would be launched in Delhi within three weeks.

“We have evolved a very comprehensive grievance redressal system which will integrate the 3-4 modes filing grievances. This grievance portal e-Nivaran is a very ambitious project.

“It has been decided to launch this project on pilot basis in Delhi and this project will be launched in 2-3 weeks time. And modalities for field formations were discussed in today’s meeting,” Jindal said.
