New Delhi: In a temporary relief to Delhi residents, the parts of the national capital on Wednesday night received light rain and thundershowers bringing an immediate drop in temperature by as many as 14 degrees Celsius. The rain and thundershowers were received in the national capital around 8.30 pm.

While the temperature dropped to 20 degrees Celsius immediately after the showers, the maximum temperature for the day was recorded at 38.3 degrees Celsius, the season's average.

The temperature was around 33-34 degrees just before it rained in Delhi.

The minimum temperature on Wednesday was 27 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season's average.

In its routine weather forecast, the Met Office said the respite is likely to continue with more showers expected on Thursday.

"There will be a cloudy sky with drizzle likely to occur. The maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 36 and 26 degrees Celsius respectively," an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Meanwhile, Mahesh Palawat, the director of private weather analyst Skymet, was also quoted as saying by IANS that the respite from the scorching heat will continue for a few more days with the temperature again rising from Sunday onwards.

The rain and thundershowers were caused by an approaching western disturbance, which brought down the temperature, the Met officials said.

Tuesday's maximum temperature settled at 37.6 degrees Celsius, one notch below the season's average while the minimum temperature was recorded at 26.5 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season's average.
