Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh Police on Thursday celebrated its first Raising Day, 68 years after the appointment of the first chief of the force in the state.

Governor Acharya Devvrat, who was the chief guest on the occasion, called upon the police to project its "friendly image" and said "good behaviour can win over the hearts of the people and instill confidence among them".

The governor exhorted the police personnel to "learn lessons from the past and work in a friendly manner with full responsibility".

"Law and order always remains foremost priority of any civilised society and therefore, the police has an important role to play," he said, adding that it was?a matter of satisfaction that the police was performing its duties with responsibility in every sector.

Devvrat called upon the individuals, parents, NGOs and the police to collectively fight the?drug menace, especially among the youth, in the state.

"Eradicate the demons of peddling as people earning money by supplying drugs are the worst as they spoil generations and should be punished," he said.

Highlighting the main activities and programmes being carried out by the police in the state, Director general of police Somesh Goyal said "Himachal has been ranked the first for the implementation of the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and System (CCTNS)".

A colorful cultural programme was presented by the jawans on the occasion.

Former governor of Nagaland and former state DGP Ashwani Kumar, chief secretary V C Pharka and senior police officials were also present on the occasion.
