Ferrero falls as seeded players have it tough

Madrid, Oct 19: The late action on day three of the Madrid Masters followed the pattern of the afternoon matches, with the seeded players having a rough time at the hands of so-called lesser players. Juan Carlos Ferrero, the number sixteen seed, was given a thorough runaround by Sweden's Robin Soderling, despite having another fiercely partisan crowd on his side in the Spanish capital.

Ferrero had the better of their only previous encounter, at the Cincinnati Masters in August, when the former world number one won 7-5, 6-4 on his way to the final, but here Soderling was in complete control.

The Swede took the first set 6-3 and wrapped up the second with and ace to set up a meeting with top seed and world number one Roger Federer in round three.
