Varsha Bhosle had attempted suicide three times before

Mumbai: When fifty-six-year old Varsha Bhosle pulled the trigger on Sunday night, it was her fourth attempt to kill herself. Daughter of singer Asha Bhosle, the former columnist and singer had attempted suicide three times before by taking an overdose of sleeping pills. Varsha, who was suffering from depression, was treated at the Bombay Hospital and the Jaslok Hospital the first two times — in 1998 and 2008, respectively. Her third suicide attempt was in 2010. Questions are being raised as to why was a ‘suicidal’ Varsha left alone at home with a firearm. So far, it hasn’t been established as to who owns the gun. Speaking to DNA, Krishna Prakash, additional commissioner of police (south), said, “We are not sure if the Belgian-made Browning patented pistol was licensed. We will also have to find out whose name it was registered in.” According to the police, most of Varsha’s family, including mother Asha Bhosle, were in Singapore attending an award function and got to know about her death very late on Monday night. While Asha Bhosle rushed back to India on hearing the news, the other family members are scheduled to return by Tuesday. The police have stated that the statement of all the family members would be recorded once they were back in Mumbai. Since no suicide note was found, the police will also investigate whether her death was caused due to a property dispute. Varsha was married to a sports columnist, whom she divorced in 1998 and was going through psychiatric treatment for her depression during the time of her death.
