West Bengal records highest single-day spike of COVID-19 cases and deaths; lockdown in over 200 containment zones

The country's total tally of coronavirus cases on Thursday (July 9, 2020) stands at 767296 including 269789 active cases, 476378 cured and 21129 deaths, as per data provided by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

New Delhi: India reports the highest single-day spike of 24879 new COVID-19 cases and 487 deaths in the last 24 hours. The country's total tally of coronavirus cases on Thursday (July 9, 2020) stands at 767296 including 269789 active cases, 476378 cured and 21129 deaths, as per data provided by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The Indian Council of Medical Research on Wednesday informed that a total of 1,04,73,771 samples tested for COVID-19 up to July 7. Of these, 2,62,679 samples were tested on Tuesday.

Maharashtra continues to be the worst affected state reporting 2,17,121 coronavirus cases and 9,250 fatalities. Followed by Tamil Nadu with a total of 1,18,594 cases and 1,636 deaths due to coronavirus. While Delhi has a total of 1,02,831 COVID-19 cases including 3,165 deaths.

For the first time, new coronavirus COVID-19 cases surpassed the 1,000-mark in West Bengal and the state also reported the highest COVID-19 deaths in 24 hours. The new COVID-19 cases in 24 hours stood at 1088‬, the active cases at 8231 and the total cases in the state have reached 25,911. The total deaths in 24 hours reached 27 and so far 854 people have succumbed to the virus.

Karnataka: With new cases 2,228 and 17 deaths in 24 hours, total positive cases reach 31,105. The total active cases in the state reach 17,782 and total deaths reach 486. The total discharges stand at 12,833 and in the last 24 hours 957 people have been discharged.

The Assam government has decided to impose a "total lockdown" in Golaghat town from Thursday evening for eight days to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease.
