Markets end flat amid range-bound trade

New Delhi: Stock markets ended in flad amid range-bound trade on Wednesday as investors are awaiting the outcome of the US Fed's two-day meeting later in the day as well as results of some more bluechips.

Sensex edges higher by 16.06 points to close at 35,176.42 while the NSE Nifty shed 21.30 points to 10,718.05. The Sensex touched a high of 35357.15 points and a low of 35072.42 points during the intra-day trade. The BSE market breadth was bearish with 1,782 declines and 915 advances.

Heavy selling was witnessed in metal, consumer durables and auto stocks. The major gainers on the BSE were Kotak Mahindra Bank, ITC, Asian Paints, HDFC and Axis Bank, while Tata Steel, Hindustan Unilever, State Bank of India, Hero MotoCorp and ICICI Bank were among the major losers.

Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth a net of Rs 261.98 crore, while foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold net shares worth Rs 385.47 crore on Monday, provisional data showed.

Financial markets were shut yesterday on account of 'Maharashtra Day'.
