Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Anjan Dutta, who passed away Thursday morning at the AIIMS hospital in New Delhi following cardiac failure, will be cremated on Friday.

Dutta's body was brought to Rajiv Bhavan in Guwahati yesterday, where party leaders paid tribute to the departed leader. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in his condolence said Dutta's death was an irreparable loss to Assam.

His body will be cremated in Sivsagar district, where he was born on April 13, 1952.

Dutta, a former transport minister of Assam and three-time legislator from the Aamguri constituency, was undergoing treatment since May 25 at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi under pulmonary medicine expert Randeep Guleria.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) members in Guwahati said Dutta went to South Africa after the Assam Assembly Elections in April and fell sick on his return.

He was initially admitted to the Apollo Hospital in New Delhi and subsequently shifted to the AIIMS. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi had visited Dutta at the AIIMS.

Dutta became the Assam state Congress president in December 2014.
