Bongaigaon: Movement of several trains were affected on Monday by a rail blockade here by members of the All Koch Rajbongshi Students Union (AKRSU).

The Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express, Howrah-bound Kamrup Express, outbound Bangalore Express and Guwahati-New Bongaigaon Dn Bohagi Express were affected by the blockade by AKRSU supported by its sister organisations, said a Northeast Frontier (N-F) Railway spokesman.

AKRSU along with Chilaray Sena and Koch Rajbongshi Mohila Samiti blocked the railway tracks from 7.30 am to 10.30 am squatting on the train tracks and shouted slogans carrying banners and placards, police officials said.

Police arrested the demonstrators and later released them.

The tracks were cleared at around 10.30 am for the onward journey of the trains, the N-F Railway spokesman said.

The agitators were demanding a separate state of Kamatapur and granting of Scheduled Tribe status to the Rajbongshi people, AKRSU President Biswajit Ray said.

The proposed Kamtapur state comprises some districts of West Bengal and some contiguous districts of Assam.
