New Delhi: In a symbolic protest against her government`s ‘inaction’ to contain rocketing onion prices, Delhi BJP leader Vijay Jolly presented a basket of the kitchen staple to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit as ‘Diwali gift’.

Jolly, who had unsuccessfully contested against Dikshit in 2008 assembly elections, said he decided to gift the onions after knowing that the chief minister "had not eaten" the kitchen staple for weeks.

At a press conference on Saturday, Dikshit had said, "After weeks I ate onions today with `bhindi` (lady finger)," admitting that the skyrocketing price of the vegetable had affected her kitchen too.

"I came to know that Dikshit had not eaten onion for weeks due to the onion crises in Delhi. That is why I decided to gift her a basket full of onions as a Diwali gift," Jolly told reporters after meeting her at her official residence here.

Accusing Delhi government of doing nothing to contain the prices of onions, Jolly said the rates have gone up due to hoarding in Delhi.

"It was a unique gift from the BJP to Dikshit to highlight the escalating prices of onion and inaction on part of her government to contain the rates. The government has failed miserably in all fronts because of which people are suffering," he said.
Jolly said he had taken a prior appointment to meet Dikshit.
