Maoists invite displaced people to join cadre

Through posters put up in Jharkhand`s Latehar district, Maoist rebels have invited displaced people to join their cadre, police said on Wednesday.

Ranchi: Through posters put up in Jharkhand`s Latehar district, Maoist rebels have invited displaced people to join their cadre, police said on Wednesday.

The posters invited people to join the Communist Party of India-Maoist`s (CPI-Maoist) People`s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA).

"The posters have been removed. Maoists, who are on the backfoot due to police offensive, are trying to woo people by cashing in on their sentiments," a police official said.

The guerrillas wrote on the posters: "People displaced due to demolition drive should join the CPI-Maoist organisation and step up protest against the government."

"Stop displacing poor people in the name of demolition drive. Demolish houses of officials involved in the demolition drive. The government should provide compensation to kin of the people killed while protesting demolition drive," the posters said.

Six people protesting the demolition drive were killed in police firing in Ranchi and Dhanbad in April.

Thousands of people have been rendered homeless due to the ongoing demolition drive in the state following a directive of the High Court that houses of those living illegally on government land should be demolished.
