Bio-diversity of Munnar should be preserved: JD-S

Thiruvananthapuram: Political parties
should jointly work for preserving the distinct and rich
bio-diversity of the Munnar hill station, Janata Dal-Secular
senior vice president Varughese George said on Sunday.

In a statement here, George said it was unfortunate that
parties were trying to politicise the issue. The government
should act with determination, going by the recent High Court
directive to take all steps to protect Munnar, he said.

The government should ignore threats from local ruling
party leaders who were trying to prevent the eviction drive
from encroached land as per court order, he said.

Stating that the JD-S stance on environmental issues had
all along been very firm, George said the socialist movement
and environmental organisations should jointly fight any
effort to harm the environment.

He termed as `commendable` the UPA government`s decision
to ``deny permission` to the proposed Athirappally hydel
project in Thrissur district which would have destroyed rich
natural resources.
